Red-tailed Hawk

  1. Have you wondered how a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a telephone pole can see its prey in the grass? Rodents mark their trails...they do this by urinating. Fresh urine reflects in UV (ultraviolet) light. Hawks, and other birds, can see in UV. They first find the "freshest" trails, and then look for movement to catch their prey.

This is similar to how flowers attract bees, bats, and other birds, to the center of their flowers for pollination.

Pollination - transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of a plant.
