Beginning in 2008, the Waterville High School Spanish classes have taken on the challenge to translate NatureMapping Animal Fact Sheets into Spanish. Spanish teacher, Dan Lopez, first began working specifically with his bilingual students.
1. It became very clear, very quickly, that his students’ abilities to speak Spanish did not correlate with their grammatical abilities.
2. Electronic translators available did not do a good job.
After two years of working with his classes on fact sheets, Dan now has incorporated fact sheets into his Spanish 2 curriculum, with the bilingual students translating fact sheets for two species as individual projects. His Spanish 1 students each work on one species as a class project.
Students select their species listed on the website. Because species are being added on a regular basis, the list meets the various interests of the students.
