This species reached the US gradually from South America and now breeds in the eastern half of the country. The year-around range is across the southern-most states, Florida and Mexico. Rare late fall, post-breeding visitor to lowlands of Washington on both sides of Cascades. Mainly in fields. Casual spring-summer. Decreasing in recent years.
