This is one of our smaller gulls and it is seen rarely in winter along the Gulf coast and in southern California. It is an infrequent migrant along both coasts. It nests in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as in the states of North and South Dakota, Montana and Idaho. In Washington, rare fall migrant east and west, mostly juveniles. Rare migrant east, casual in Spring.
