Occurs primarily on firm, hard-packed soil or rocky ground in association with sagebrush, and occasionally in Greasewood or Bitterbrush. Probably extinct below 1000 feet.

All steppe zones with in its range were core except for the Wheatgrass/Fescue zone, which is peripheral. Bare-ground and non-forested habitat were good; all other habitats were excluded.
