The development of NatureTracker began in 2001 using an advanced wildlife tracking data collection sequence developed by Jon Young. A decision to keep track measurements and behavior in NatureTracker was made during the 2001 and 2002 wolf tracking trips sponsored by the Wilderness Awareness School.

A total of 39 trackers recorded 2,750 wolf sign records over a 4-day period in 2002 illustrating the effectiveness of documenting wildlife movement if focused on one species. These capabilities are included in the Nature Tracker sequence.
