Sharing the Horny Toad Project in Boise, Idaho 2006
by Hanna C. and Jacob S.
Jacob, Hanna, and Janelle were excited to go to Boise, Idaho with Mrs. Petersen where they met Karen Dvornich to present the horny toad project. The trip started with the flights to Boise, Idaho. The first flight was 43 minutes from Wenatchee to Seattle. It was the first flight for Jacob who found it fun and exciting. The second flight was 2 hours and 20 minutes from Seattle to Boise. Right when they got there they checked in at the hotel.
The next day they went to the Discovery Idaho museum. The first thing that caught their eyes was an invention that you sit in a chair and pull yourself up by a rope attached to pulleys. The faster you pull the rope the easier it is to go up. The slower you pull the harder it is. The other cool invention was the bed of nails.
On Wednesday the group presented to a joint meeting of the Idaho Chapter and Northwest Section of The Wildlife Society, the Northwest Scientific Association, and the Northwest Lichenologists Conference. They were part of a Symposium called "The Role of Citizen Science in the Conservation and Management of Fish and Wildlife." A PowerPoint presentation designed by the students was shown as they talked.
The history of the project and the role of the participating farmers were discussed by Hanna. Jacob used photos to explain the habitat the horny toads live in. Janelle explained how the ArcView mapping software is used to analyze the data and told about student tracking experiences. The food preference study, over-wintering project, and the ethogram were explained. Finally, the students explained how they mentor each other.
On the quick trip to the airport the students were complimented on their presentation by other conference participants. Stormy weather delayed plane flights causing them to get home at midnight after traveling through a blinding snowstorm.
