Students Present to Local Historical Society
By Walter and Hanna

In March 2006 Walter E., Hanna C., and Jessica D. all went to the Historical Society in Waterville, Washington. We were presenting the Short horned Lizard project to people from all over Waterville. We each had our own little part in it even Mrs. Petersen. We all talked about What the Short Horned lizards did over winter and other seasons.

Past and present projects were explained. Some things the past 4th graders did to see what horny toads did in the winter was they dug a hole in the school yard and filled the cage with dirt. They put two horny toads in it and they immediately burrowed down. In the spring they sadly found the one of the horny toads crushed under the dirt and cage. The other horny toad was gone.

Walter talked about the data sheets and what they were used for. The data sheets were used to record the sightings of the Horny toads. He also talked about the chart we record the framers sightings. Almost every day we record the farmer's sightings.

Hanna talked about how we tracked the horny toads. We tracked them with little transmitters that we glue on the horny toads back. Then we set him out in the field. A couple days later we will go out in the fields with the transmitter and punch in the codes. When we have the right code it will start to beep-the louder and the more bars the closer the horny toad is to you.

Jessica talked about how to sort the sightings on the excel spreadsheet. She told them that if you wanted to see all the sightings the farmers saw below 80 degrees she would push sort by temp. Then all the sightings below 80 degrees would be in one spot and above 80 degrees would be in one spot then you could look at all the sightings below 80 degrees. Next the students would use the spreadsheet information to make graphs.

We showed the George Lucas Foundation video made about the horny toads in 2004. It showed the tracking, the farmers coming into the classroom, and some of the graphs they made. Then we bowed and answered questions from the crowd. After the presentation we went to the store and got ice cream to celebrate another successful presentation.
