Sharing the Horny Toad Project in Spokane 2006

Seven people went to Spokane to present to the state meeting of the Conservation Districts about 4 different projects that many different people worked on for 16 years. The projects are Douglas creek watershed study, Horny toad project, tree project, and farmer books. The Douglas creek water shed includes a bioblitz by the 3rd grade. The 6th grade did a soil analysis and found the velocity of the water. The rest of us did water testing and collected macroinverterbrates.

Next we explained how we work with farmers to collect data on horny toads. Then we told how farmers came in and told Mrs. Petersen that they wanted a book of all of their farm lands, so Bryan and Walter spent about one hundred hours on the first book of maps. Finally we explained the tree map we made for the town of Waterville.

Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Petersen drove us to Spokane and the heater broke and the front had no hot air but of course the kids had all the heat they needed. While we waited for the suburban to get fixed we stayed in one of the commissioners hotel rooms and watched TV so we got started home a little late. Before the presentation we got to have a fancy lunch and we got a lot of free things from the exhibits. Some of us got stuffed chickens. We got hot chocolate before we started the presentation. After the whole program we all thought in our minds "Can we go to the mall?" but it was snowing so we went home and ate dinner at Doxie's.

Giving a presentation like this to several hundred people made us feel scared and proud. We worked hard and practiced for about 12 hours. It wasn't easy memorizing our parts, but we did it. We thought about the advice that Allen's mom gave us when she said, "Pain is temporary, but pride is forever." We will always remember our feeling of pride in our accomplishments.
