Little River Boy

Oxbow

As Little River Boy continues down the river toward the oxbow pond. Drifting along the gentle current, he sees a family of turtles seeming to greet him. Later, a maple tree waves in the wind to him. He feels a tickle underneath the hull of his little canoe. A muskrat's head pops up out of the water long enough to wonder what a little canoe could be doing in the calm oxbow pond.

In the middle of the pond, Little River Boy hears the soft, sweet sound of the chipping Sparrow. A lovely descending scale is performed by the canyon wren. Erupting from the dark, murky water are bubbles that pop. Little River Boy wonders if the bubbles could be from the underwater growth lurking beneath the wooden canoe. A harsh cry breaks the placid water turning the water to waves of terror. The predators have arrived ready for their lunch. A great blue heron snatches a hiding frog and smashes him with its beak. A red-tailed hawk circles around and around in a monotonous manner -- waiting for the perfect moment to grab a snack. Finally, it finds a scrumptious bull snake and descends. The hawk catches the snake and carries it back to its nest high in the trees.

Nearing the end of the day, Little River Boy approaches a monstrous pile of sediment. As Little River Boy nears the sticks and twigs covered with mud, he realized that there is no way to get back to the river. He will be stuck in the treacherous nets of the sticks until they are cleared away. Little River Boy tries his best to pass the twigs, and he lands into them with a CRASH! Through all of his struggling he fails to escape. He waits and waits but cannot think of any way to save himself. As it grew dark a bluebird lands close to Little River Boy. It is gathering twigs for its nest. If the bird keeps returning to the pile of twigs, there would be an opening wide enough for Little River Boy to pass.

Sure enough, Little River Boy was free and continued his journey down the Little Spokane River.
