Dragonflies are predators and eat other insects, annelids, small crustaceans and mollusks.

The nymphs are relatively large. Their body shape may be roundish or long, although the abdomen is usually thickened.. They also may be different colors, such as gray, greenish or reddish.

The nymphs will emerge from the water in large numbers just prior to transforming into the terrestrial portion of their lifes. After securing a hold onto a piece of vegetation, the thorax splits and the new flying dragonfly emerges.
