What is Your Scientific Question?

Cedar Waxwing

Most people want to know what is the biodiversity (e.g., wildlfie, insects, plants, and fish) around their homes, community, or schools. They want to take an inventory. Other people want to track changes over time. For example: Restoring a wetland.

What are you interested in learning? Be careful because there can be multiple questions that need to be answered before you zero in on a scientific question and set up a monitoring project to answer that question.

Here are samples of questions that can be answered by using the NatureMapping Data Reporting Protocols:

Presence/Absence

What species do I see every month?
What species do I see at different times of the year?

Population Changes

Are the number of species I see increasing, decreasing, or staying the same?
Are the number of individuals of a certain species increasing, decreasing, or staying the same?

Habitat Modification, such as landscaping to attract wildlife

What species were there before the change?
What species are visiting when the plants are young?
What species are visiting when the plants have matured?
