Pierce County Biodiversity Network
Point Defiance Park Bioblitz

Results

fungi_specimensOver 168 volunteers participated in the bioblitz. The weather was cool and on Saturday it drizzled, but it didn't stop anyone. A total of 1,353 data points were collected.

This bioblitz included some new "firsts":
  • Nearshore sampling for marine invertebrates
  • Tree canopy sampling for insects
  • A survey and demonstration of the software that allows anyone to ask questions about NatureMapping data without having to be a programmer.

Nine taxonomic groups (e.g., plants, birds, mammals - tracking, reptiles and amphibians, fungi, bats, terrestrial invertebrates, marine invertebrates, and fish) were surveyed with multiple teams of experts, citizens, and K-12 students. Each team used a PDA/GPS with NatureMapping's data collection software, NatureTracker to record observations, locations, and saw their data displayed as it was hotsynched to the computer.

The final tallies are in for all taxa teams except the terrestrial insects. The map is interactive - zoom in and click on a pushpin.

Maps: The results of the NatureMapping/SQLShare Survey are in. This survey was given to 48 Biolitz volunteers to learn what they would like to see and ask about bioblitz, theirs or of NatureMapping data in general.
