2. Speaking Species II

Purpose:
An in-class or homework activity to help students identify the animals common to their area.

Materials needed:

  • Internet access
  • Map of state with counties (click here)
  • Student's data collection form.
  • Student's journal.

Teacher’s Guide:

  1. Determine your location on the map of state with counties.
  2. Demonstrate to students how to access “maps” on the website.  Explain the meaning of the legend colors.
  3. Create a team of 2 students, either using the same two animals from Speaking Species 1, or select two different animals.
  4. Students use the NatureMapping website to determine if the selected animal is common to your area.
