NatureMapping Activities
6. Introduction to Mapping - Part II
Purpose:
Understand the idea of map scale
Learn to read topographic maps
Materials Needed:
Teacher’s Guide:
- Using maps around the room, point at SE, SW, NW, NE corners
- Using the same Treasure maps from Part 1, have the students repeat drawing their routes using the matching 1:100,000 topographic map at a scale of 1 mile = 2.3'
- Give each student a copy of the Scale bar.
- Students should quickly realize that the "squares" on the maps are 1 mile in length on each side. Did they figure that out? These squares are called Sections and will be discussed in Protocol 8.
- Do a brainstorm and write ideas on the board. Ask students would they be able to get to their treasures by driving or were there obstacles in their way. How would they overcome the obstacles (e.g., river, no roads)?
