Did You Know?

Habitat

  • The water spider, Argyroneta aquatica, creates a diving bell underwater, grabs a bubble of air with its legs and puts it inside the diving bell so the spider can breathe. The spider catches minnows and eats them underwater inside its diving bell.

Fish need clean, oxygenated water at the right temperature, food and shelter. Plants along rivers and streams (riparian vegetation) provide shade and cover.

DID YOU KNOW...
  • Shellfish found along our coasts need clean water to survive and make them safe for us to eat.
  • It is feared that Kokanee (land-locked) salmon numbers are dropping in Lake Washington.

The small red fish are Kokanee. The larger fish are the same species (Sockeye) that travel out to sea.
