How to Collect Data

Data Collection Form

This is the methods section...what are you going to do that you are willing to do the same way over the length of your project.

  1. How much time can you spend out in the field? 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours?

  2. How often can you collect data? Daily for a week, once a week, once a month, once a year?

  3. How are you going to collect data? Walking a transect? Sitting in one spot (e.g., sit spot)?
Set up stations and stay at each one for a certain amount of time?

  4. How are you going to record your data?
Field Journals, Data Collection Form, NatureTracker ?

Examples:

An inventory of wildlife will be taken around my house for a year. A station will be selected on each side of the house and data collection will begin between 8 and 10 am. Data collection will last 15 minutes at each station. I will use a field journal to draw and record my observations, then transfer my data to the NatureMapping spreadsheet and uploaded to their website.

A stream that was channelized (e.g. straightened) to create a pasture for horses on each side, will be restored and monitored for 5 years. Wildlife will be inventoried 4 times a year before and after restoration. The area is divided into zones and 2 teams per zone will walk throughout the zone recording wildlife and insects. NatureTracker data collection software on units with GPS will be used to record data and latitude/longitude. Data will be displayed over an aerial photo and compared to each visit. Data will be exported in the NatureMapping data format and uploaded to their website.
